What this track is built for

Slow chugging guitars for you to practice some pentantonic licks over, great if your guitar is tuned to Eb.

E flat is quite a common tuning for a lot of Rock and Metal bands - it gives a slightly downtuned, harder feel to a track without going all the way down to C or A# on the lower E string.

This track is slightly unusual as it’s got quite a slow feel to it. You might want to practice some faster pentatonic licks with 16th notes as the 135bpm speed this should be achievable for most novice guitarists.

You can of course slow it down and build up to this if you download the MP3 and use your player’s audio tools to reduce the speed or use the YouTube controls to adjust the playback speed.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Understand the Eb pentantonic scale

Take a bit of time if to understand the notes and patterns in the Eb pentatonic scale - link below. Once you have a good understanding of the notes you will be in a position to start playing along to the track and soloing.

  2. 02

Start off by just cycling through the notes of the scale going up and down. You might notice at certain points the notes against the backing track just feel right.

  3. 03

    Start inventing some licks!

Already got something in mind to play along with the track? No problem! But try and be creative and use different patterns at different parts of the track - again some note patterns will sound different and fit better.

FAQ

Quick
answers.

The questions teachers most often ask about this resource — sizing, licensing, how to actually print it.

What scales work over this backing track?

Eb (or D#) minor pentatonic of course!

Why is this slow? 135bpm is a reasonably fast tempo?

135bpm with 8th notes gives the whole track a reasonably slow feel. If you think Creeping Death by Metallica is 200+bpm at all downpicked 8th notes then you can get a feel for the difference in speed!
